Quilt Out Loud! Episode 108
Quilt Out Loud Episode Notes
Episode 8

Segment 1
Jodie and Mark open the show from one of the famed bridges of Madison County in Winterset, Iowa. Yes, that Madison County! As in the book by Robert J. Waller and the movie starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. They sample a mid-west favorite, cheese curds, which these two Easterners have only heard about. They sound unappetizing, but are great, especially fried!

Segment 2

Next stop, Jethro’s BBQ (yes, that Jethro of Beverly Hills) to try Iowa’s own take on fried cheese. Mike Booth, chef at Jethro’s, shows Mark and Jodie how they prepare fried cheddar cheese blocks—a customer favorite!
Artichoke Cheese Curd Salad
2 cans Artichokes, drained and cut into 6ths or 8ths
½ to ¾ lb green olives
1 package Good Seasons Italian dressing
½ to ¾ lbs cheese curds (you can use mozzarella)
Black pepper and garlic powder to taste
Pinch or oregano
Hot pepper (optional)
Oil
Cut cheese into bite size pieces. Add artichokes, olives, dressing (not prepared), black pepper, garlic power, and oregano. Drizzle oil over mixture. Let marinate, refrigerated, a few hours before serving. It is better the longer it stands.
Chipotle Ranch Dressing/Dipping Sauce
4 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup sour cream
1 chipotle in adobo, chopped, plus 1 tablespoon adobo sauce (eyeball it)
2 tablespoons chopped dill
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
2 tablespoons chopped chives
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Mix all ingredients well.
If you like cilantro, try this version:
2 garlic cloves, minced
½ teaspoon salt
1/3 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons buttermilk
½ to 1 small chipotle in adobe, minced
3 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro leaves
1 scallion, green and white pats, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon freshly grated lime zest
Mash minced garlic and salt together to make a paste. Add remaining ingredients. Mix together for a creamy dressing
Segment 3

Jodie and Mark arrive at the Iowa Public Broadcasting Studios to surprise Liz Porter on the set of Love of Quilting. Before they enter the building, Jodie and Mark swap stories about their first time on television.

Then, they make their way through the backrooms of the building, and pop out of the dark while Liz is taping the show. After a quick greeting Liz invites Jodie to stay and help her on the show, and sends Mark off to the control room.
Segment 4

Mark interviews Liz Porter on the set of Love of Quilting, giving viewers a candid glimpse at the real Liz, a rock star in the quilting world. The spa Liz mentions in Pappalacta. And you all know what Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are!

Segment 5
Join Jodie and Mark at the famed Northside Café. Remember that scene in the Bridges of Madison County movie? Well, it’s not quite the same with our pair, though Mark is most definitely a stand in for Clint Eastwood.
Mark and Jodie share their “quiltspiration.” As designers, they find quilt ideas everywhere they go: sidewalks, the brickwork on buildings, even doorknobs. See the blocks they made from inspiration in their travels.

Segment 6
Jodie and Mark take a seat on the bench in the Fons & Porter Quilt Supply shop to share their five favorites books–not necessarily quilting.
