Mark & Jodie

Author Rose Hughes And Her Woolies

July 1st, 2010

Segment 1: What’s Up?

Jodie launches the first episode of the second season from the Northcott Fabrics booth at InternationalQuilt Market in Minneapolis. Both the Photoshop diet and the in-the-flesh versions of Mark join her to open the show. Mark shows off his latest creation, his Chester Gardens fabric line. Mark turns a seriously amazing iron into steamy silliness as he and Art Garabedian introduce you to the latest introduction in Reliable Corporation’s lineup, the V50.

Segment 2: Author Rose Hughes And Her Woolies

That Patchwork Place author Rose Hughes shows Jodie how to use batting and wool to make her versatile and very cute “Woolies” which she uses to embellish her quilts and even turns them into jewelry. See how easy these little felted gems are to make!

North Meets South

June 10th, 2010

Segment 3: Door Knock

First thing in the morning Mark took off in Jodie’s truck to nock on Jodie’s Bee Buddy Jennifer Yacola’s door. Another northerner turned Southerner, Jennifer wows her Bee friends with every new quilt she makes. And she wowed Mark. She numbers each quilt show makes and calls them “practice quilts” which is why Jodie wanted mark to meet her. Each one is hand quilted, from her original Mariner’s Compass design to her needle turn appliqué album quilt.

Segment 4: North Meets South: Sampling Drinks

Jodie spirits Mark away from quilting to her favorite restaurant, Milton’s in the newly incorporated Milton, Georgia. There Katherine DeSantis, bar tender extraordinaire, mixes up signature drinks from the south and then from the north for the duo to sample. Find out which ones they liked and which received a thumbs down.

Lights Action, Puppets!

April 1st, 2010

Segment 1: What’s Up?

Inspiration is everywhere, but what better place to find it than through the eyes of a child. The Center for Puppetry Arts is the place for puppetry. None other than Jim Henson cut the ribbon at the dedication ceremony! Jodie and her guest host Rob Appell introduce the show from the atrium, both having brought their own side kicks. Jodie’s is, of course her rubber duckie. She is hoping to find Ernie the puppet at the Center. Rob is accompanied by the puppet he has had since his childhood.

Segment 2: Lights Action, Puppets!

Jodie heads off on a tour of the exhibits at the Center with curator Jeremy Underwood. From historical puppets to new age “This is a puppet?” puppets, Jodie learns the definition of what a puppet is, and has her eyes opened to the incredible imagination of puppet makers and puppeteers. At their last stop, Jeremy and Jodie find out where AWOL Rob has been during the tour—and it is off limits to the general public!

We Visit the Gold Museum and The Fudge Factory!

March 18th, 2010

Segment 5: Striking It Rich in the Gold Museum

Jodie and Rob arrive at the courthouse in the town square which is now home to the Dahlonega Gold Museum . Ranger Julie Autry gives them the gold tour, including a water cannon that excited Rob, and one of those treasured nuggets which both Rob and Jodie covet. Julie served up some colorful stories of townsfolk of the time. Superstitions and colorful characters abounded wherever gold fever struck!

Next, it was time for lunch and there’s no better place to catch a bite than the family-style Southern cooking of The Smith House, which was also home to one of the town’s most enduring personalities. (Jodie recommends the fried okra.)

Segment 6: Fudge Shop Book Review

Rob finally gets his dessert at Jodie’s favorite stop in Dahlonega The Fudge Factory. (Just as yummy as Magical threads, though way more fattening.) The Nuggets truly are the best turtles Jodie has ever tasted. And yes, they do mail order!

But first, it’s time for some book reviews. The theme is quilts made using strips, like sweet treats.

Introducing Sew-mando!

March 12th, 2010

Segment 3: Sew-mando!

Watch out, Sew-mando has arrived! Jodie and Rob arrive at Magical Threads, which is just off the square in Dahlonega, housed in an adorable Victorian house. Rob dons his Sew-mando vest and Jodie quickly takes her leave to shop for fabric.
A sewing machine dealer and repair person himself, Rob takes the opportunity to show you five tips to keep your sewing machine running smoothly between visits to your sewing machine dealer. Remember that your sewing machine manual and your dealer are your machine’s best friends. Be sure to refer to them often for many hours of happy sewing.

Segment 4: Gold Rush Table Runner

With the Baby Lock sewing machine cleaned and ready for sewing, Rob joins Jodie in another room at Magical Threads to see what the sewing project is for the day. And it’s a beauty! “Flowing Lines” by Elizabeth Rosenberg is from Skinny Quilts and Table Runners II.  Rob and Jodie demonstrate cutting and sewing the free form curves of this easy, fun, and oh-so pretty table topper. The original is made of gorgeous silk. Jodie chose batiks for her edition of the project, to give you a different look.

Gold!

March 4th, 2010

Segment 1: Gold Rush!

From outside the picturesque courthouse in Dahlonega, Georgia where gold was first discovered in the United States, Jodie introduces her friend Rob Appell as co-host for this episode. Rob teaches and works with his mom at The Cotton Ball in Morro Bay, California. He’s an author, and is designing an ongoing line of striking quilts featuring endangered species. Proceeds from his patterns support organizations working for these animals. Jodie shows two of her gold quilts. The first, is a batik log cabin from one of her out-of-print books, and the second uses her curved piecing technique. (Click for a free sample block for this technique.) Jodie and Rob introduce the theme of the show: gold fever! Dahlonega is where the saying, “There’s gold in them there hills” was born.

Visit Gold Rush Days in Dahlonega in third week in October and enjoy this gateway to the Appalachians.

Segment 2: Gold Mine!

Jodie and Rob are greeted at the Consolidated Gold Mine by Miner Mike, who appears to have just stepped out of the past. Miner Mike proceeds to lead our co-hosts into the past, down into the Georgia mountain where gold was mined. The mine is complete with hibernating bats, which sent one of the crew above ground real fast. (We had mercy, that wasn’t caught on tape!) Back above ground, Miner Mike shows Jodie and Rob how gold is panned. Our co-hosts find that there is skill involved in getting rich. Or, earning one’s lunch!

Quiltspiration

February 17th, 2010

Segment 5

Join Jodie and Mark at the famed Northside Café. Remember that scene in the Bridges of Madison County movie? Well, it’s not quite the same with our pair, though Mark is most definitely a stand in for Clint Eastwood.

Mark and Jodie share their “quiltspiration.” As designers, they find quilt ideas everywhere they go: sidewalks, the brickwork on buildings, even doorknobs. See the blocks they made from inspiration in their travels.

Segment 6

Jodie and Mark take a seat on the bench in the Fons & Porter Quilt Supply shop to share their five favorites books–not necessarily quilting.
